Group Therapy

In general, therapy provides awareness and insight into the roles, both positive and negative, we play in the events and relationships of which we are a part. In group therapy, hearing feedback and learning from others fosters awareness that one is not unique in his/her problems and responses. This awareness is the basis for the change and healing that occurs. At Austin Psychiatric Consultants, we work within the safe, comforting boundaries of the groups to maximize the potential for patients to learn about themselves and try new ways of responding to situations.

Many of the issues adult children of alcoholics and other types of dysfunction (ACOA/Ds) face as adults – the need to strive for unattainable perfection, ineffectiveness in relationships, difficulty setting appropriate limits with people, harsh self-criticism – are strongly connected to the unspoken “rules” they learned growing up with an alcoholic/dysfunctional parent. 
 
For the last decade, Dr. Landrum has worked in both group and individual therapy settings to help ACOA/Ds uncover these rules and reevaluate their effectiveness within the context of current situations. In her ongoing process-oriented therapy group, Dr. Landrum emphasizes the subtle differences between self-nurturance versus selfishness, privacy versus secrecy, and being unrealistic versus unreasonable. By focusing on discovery rather than blame, she helps ACOA/Ds take control over their life choices and overcome long-ago-learned maladaptive patterns of responding to others.

Everyone has felt anxious at one time or another. For some, this anxiety is transient, a result of a stressful 
situation temporarily overwhelming their ability to cope. However, at times, this feeling can be more severe, or last so long that an individual start to feel as if all situations are beyond his/her control. When people believe they are unable to cope with issues in their lives, they stop trying, and even everyday tasks become overwhelming, often leading to harmful habits or distorted thinking. Group members have a range of anxiety-related issues, from situational anxiety, to social phobias, to obsessive-compulsive disorders. With a mix of relaxation exercises, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and process-oriented support, this group teaches people to identify and effectively deal with current and chronic stressors.

Individuals with bipolar disorder often view themselves as their disorder, rather than viewing their disorder as one of the many parts of their personality. Social stigma and the fear of being judged often create a sense of being damaged and alone in their issues. By creating a supportive, non-judgmental group atmosphere, people dealing with bipolar have an opportunity to see how others have dealt with this issue and learn to accept this part of themselves. Viewing others as a resource as well as becoming a resource to others helps individuals realize that their bipolar disorder does not lower their worth as individuals.

Understanding a diagnosis of mental illness, and the is difficult. Dealing with mood swings, medication shifts, arguments, parenting, money issues, and problematic behaviors is a difficult road to navigate. At APC, our experience is with both individuals who have mental illness as well as their families. This enables us to help families learn to resolve some of the confusion and anger that can occur, especially when the disorder has gone long undiagnosed. Individuals with mental illness may have engaged in behaviors (e.g., infidelity, excessive spending, risk-taking) that have weakened the framework of their relationships. Allowing family members, a place to air hurt and anger and helping them learn to understand mental illness and the effects it can have on judgment and impulse control is an important step in allowing them to heal the hurts they may have experienced as a result of their loved one’s behaviors. By helping them learn to separate the person they love from their symptoms, understand behavioral changes in the context of mental illness, and recognize cues and warning signs, we help families shear up their foundation and build a stronger, more secure future together.

Often girls in adolescence get caught up in the day-to-day struggle with emotional problems or are overwhelmed with peer pressure and responsibilities. They have a difficult time understanding they can be successful without having to be perfect or live up to the rigid stereotypes of what a teenage girl should be. Faced with this narrower range of “perfect”, something often reinforced by adults around them, adolescents often feel stuck developmentally. A supportive group can help girls to understand themselves in the wider context of social and cultural labels. By helping them realize stereotypes can be broken, girls come away empowered to express themselves as individuals, with a clearer understanding and appreciation of themselves.

Often individuals who have worked in individual therapy for some time find they are ready to transition to a more supportive maintenance type of atmosphere. Donna Reaves, LPC, LMFT is currently accepting new members into her ongoing support group for individuals who have already undergone individual therapy. Ms. Reaves’ group is designed for people who have an awareness about their emotional issues and do not want to stop therapy altogether, but want a setting in which they can heighten their level of awareness. Specific issues will vary, but the typical focus of the group is maintaining the goals individuals have reached in therapy, achieving more social comfort, and applying learned coping skills to real-life situations.

Every parent goes through times when interactions with his or her child are troubled, and nothing makes parents feel more helpless than not being able to communicate effectively with their children. For years we have worked with parents and caregivers to help them form realistic expectations and goals about their children’s behavior based on developmental information. We strive to help parents become aware of how their stress affects interactions with their children and how they can learn to manage this stress effectively. In this structured, time-limited parenting skills group, parents are offered a place to be supported as well as clear, concise strategies to dealing effectively and lovingly with their children. By improving their relationships and becoming more effective in dealing with their children, parents set the stage for them to have rewarding relationships throughout their lives.

Women have more choices today than ever before. With this comes more decisions to make and tasks to juggle. In an effort to keep so many balls in the air at one time, often women let their own needs crash to the ground, confusing self-nurturance with selfishness. This ongoing process-oriented therapy group is designed to help women define, evaluate, and articulate their needs. Stress, time, and anger management, boundary setting at home and work, and avoiding the role of a martyr are some of the issues typically discussed. Whether full time at home or in the workforce, part time in both, or transitioning from one to the other, there is a balance between work, family, and self that women can achieve.

Medication used to treat certain disorders may be harmful for a fetus and women may decide, with their families and physicians, to stop all medication prior to getting pregnant. At that time, more than any other, having support is essential. Pregnancy is a time of great change and can be stressful, even when that change is long sought after. Women dealing with mental illness may experience even more of this, especially once they discontinue medication that has helped stabilize them. We work with women who have made this choice to help them work through their thoughts and feelings, effectively deal with family and work stressors, and continue to feel supported through this exciting time in their lives.

The anticipation and energy surrounding a new baby may be experienced quite differently for a child who is becoming an older sibling for the first time. Children may feel anxious, angry, or confused about their new role, especially if they are young and still developing their own emerging identities. Some children may try on more grown up behaviors, while others may revert to those they hadn’t shown since they were much younger (e.g., thumb sucking, toileting accidents, etc.). Finding ways to prepare young children for a new sibling is essential in making this period of adjustment as smooth as possible. Erin Pearl, LPC, has developed a 3-part program to help parents and children get ready for a new baby. The program combines information sessions for parents with hands-on activities for children. This unique combination allows parents to express their concerns and get ideas for dealing with the transition while making the birth of a sibling more concrete for children.

POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION

Almost 85% of new mothers will experience “the baby blues,” a period of mild anxiety, depression, 
irritability, and mood swings following the birth of a child. This is normal and typically goes away 
after a few weeks. In some cases, woman may experience postpartum depression, a more serious 
condition that can occur anywhere from a day to several months after giving birth. Postpartum 
Depression affects a mother’s ability to function and care for her baby. 
Signs of postpartum depression may include:
  •  Suicidal thoughts
  • Indifference to a new baby
  • Inability/unwillingness to care for a new baby 
  • Obsessive worry about the baby
  •  Intrusive thoughts of harming the baby
  • Inability to sleep (not just lack of) 
  • Feelings of worthlessness 
  • Loss of pleasure

Post-Partum Depression Group

Even more than other types, post-partum depression (PPD) can be very isolating (especially for women with no other history of depression). Individuals with PPD may be ashamed of the thoughts they are having. They may think they’re unfit to mother and may think they’re “crazy” or that no one else has ever felt like this. They may be unwilling to tell their spouse or even their doctor. Erin Pearl, MA, LPC, provides a place for women to talk honestly and openly about their thoughts and feelings without being judged. She provides support as well as education and information about post-partum depression, helping to normalize the experience, and helping women see when and how they should ask for help. Teaching tools to manage depression and anxiety, Ms. Pearl gives women hope to get through this period and continue their journey as mothers.
Sports Motivation and Relaxation Training ™ from APC can help your
athletes put more of themselves into the game and get more out of it.
 
Play S.M.A.R.T.™ is a program created by APC to help athletes improve performance and get more enjoyment out of their competitive sport. Using relaxation techniques, visualization, and hypnosis, we help increase focus and self-confidence, decrease tension, and maximize goal-setting.
 
Although some athletes or coaches may choose to participate in only one or the other, the Play S.M.A.R.T.™ program has two components group and individual. Initially, groups of 15 or fewer same-sport athletes learn to identify and recognize signs of stress in their bodies, as well as events that trigger that stress. Groups work on various relaxation and stress management techniques, and move on to visualization, and rehearsal. We work with coaches to provide sports-specific visualization and motivational components, making the Play S.M.A.R.T.™ program appropriate for any competitive sport.
 
The second stage of the program builds on the relaxation and stress management learned in the group setting and takes it to a whole new level. Individuals who need more intensive relaxation training, individuals whose triggers are highly ingrained, or athletes who have experienced some type of performance-related trauma (physical or psychological) benefit especially from this added component. By using hypnotherapy, we can provide more intensive, more individualized training. Because hypnosis, a state of increased relaxation, heightens receptivity, focusing on goals is more easily established. Creating a subconscious link between old "triggers" and new, desired behaviors, helps athletes generalize the relaxation effect more easily to sports performance.

Hypnosis and Sports Performance

Like any other performance, sports performance is greatly affected by anxiety. How often does one bad (or one good) performance lead to others? How many times have people experienced “mental blocks,” making it hard for them to do things they know how to do? For many individuals, one mess-up can throw them off mentally, heightening anxiety, lowering focus, and creating a downward performance cycle. This makes it hard for them to shake it off and get back in the game. Optimal performance in sports comes when individuals are highly focused and confident, but also highly relaxed. Pre-event rehearsal and self-talk play a critical part in the resulting performance and enjoyment of the sport. Many sports present repeated exposure to potential failure, and athletes often have difficulty recovering and refocusing, dwelling on mistakes and sabotaging their performance. Athletes’ core beliefs about themselves and about stress have incredible power to limit or advance their performance.
 
Using stress management, relaxation, and visualization techniques can help athletes reach a place of deep calm. Being able to first achieve this state and later recall it is a critical piece in helping them reach their full performance potential. For some individuals, even deeper relaxation is needed. For others, cognitive restructuring techniques need to be added to help them interpret their own performance differently. Individuals who have had a specific injury may fall in this category. Associated trauma can often hinder later performance as the body instinctively acts to protect itself. Some athletes may have more difficulty recalling or getting back to the state of relaxation in the context of performance. For these individuals, adding the element of hypnosis can help them bridge this gap. Hypnosis is a state of relaxation and increased receptivity. When an individual is hypnotized, the relaxed mind is better able to effectively focus on visualizing and meeting goals, and is more open to suggestions that allow the individual to generalize this feeling to performance situations. Situations that triggered the “block” can be redirected to automatically trigger the sense of relaxation achieved in hypnosis. Our goal is to get athletes out of their heads and back into the zone to help them get the most out of the game.
